I just adopted two brothers from the shelter. They were there for over a year, and are still nervous around my family (we got them Saturday). I got a litter box the new breeze system and they are using it just fine but the urine smell is awful. We are changing the pad twice a day because of it... Any recommendations?

  1. Put folded newspapers under the Litter.

keep the litter tray out of the living room.

    Take an anti-histamine

  2. I don't use clumping or clay litters. The litter tracks all over the place, it sticks to the pan and makes changing the litter a real chore and they do little to remove the smell of cat urine. I used "flushable" litter years ago and ended up having it back up the pipes and poopy water and litter came up through my tub - nasty!

Wood stove pellets are the absolute best litter to use. Not only do they totally remove the urine odor but they absorb the moisture, the pan dumps out dry and the best part? You can buy a 40 pound bag for about FOUR TO FIVE DOLLARS! It's the same compressed pine sawdust pellets as Feline Pine so anyone using that stop wasting your money! Nothing really kills p**p odor plus I don't want my cats to end up with poopy paws so I scoop any poops out daily. With four cats and three litter boxes I dump the pans out after about a week or so. Since the litter's so cheap I don't mind changing it often.

You can find them at Home Depot, Lowes and another home stores and most grocery stores like the Safeway, Fred Meyer and Albertsons stores here in the Northwest US. Feed stores also sell them as farmers/horse owners use them in horse stalls as well.

  3. i use crystal cat litter. i feel that it keeps the smell down much better. i use the fresh step brand but there are other brands out there. it took a day or 2 for my cat to get used to it since it is a different consistency and feel than regular cat litter. the crystal litter is made of silica and has no dust. i love it. also, maybe try something made for multiple cats. male cat urine is much stronger than female cat urine so you are gonna have to change whatever you use pretty often anyway.

  4. You might try "Yesterday's News".  It's small pellets made from recycled newspaper.  Very absorbent and little if any dust.  You can buy Yesterday's News at PetSmart.

    Good Luck!

  5. For just a few dollars, do wehat I do.   Try a product that I use and love for my litter box (2 cats). It is called Innofresh Pet odor absorber . It is an activated carbon filter that really does the job. All I do is keep a couple of these clipped to side of litter box and forget about it. Doesn't matter what litter I buy now. These little odor absorbers work great. I buy these on line from www.innofresh.com
