What is the best type of material to use as flooring in a garage

I want to put a garage mat down in the garage but there are so many out there I am not sure what to get. I live in new england so the weather can be very hot to very cold.

What's the purpose of the flooring? Aesthetics? Functionality? Sounds like a bit of both.

I use a rubber-backed indoor-outdoor carpet. They come in various sizes at Home Depot, Lowes, are fairly cheap, clean up well and you can put them wherever you want them.

Otherwise, just put a sealer or floor paint down and forget it.
