What is the best type of restaurant to work as a server? Private owned or a chain? Which would pay more?

  1. Private, if the restaurant is fine dining, no question!  However,  indie Mom-and-Pop lower end venues just don't have the volume that the chain places do in that tier.  Hourly is almost always next to nil, but you have a better chance of solid benefits, like health and dental insurance, in a corporate restaurant.  Still, a corporate restaurant is a soul-sucking experience that removes artistry from the dining experience and places people in a formulaic equation. So- here is your real question:  do you  want to be comfortable, or do you want to take PRIDE in what you are doing?  The answer was an easy one for me.  Private ownership.


  2. Private owned would be a better workplace (friendlier, more family-like) but as for pay, it will depend on how busy they are, if they serve alcohol, how good the food is, etc.  Chains depend on those things too, but the difference is you are just a number to management, not a human being.
