  1. Mother of thyme - thymus vulgarus - spreads readily.  You can trim it by hand & hang to dry the leaves for cooking.  Another really great thing is that when you walk on it or mow it, it releases that wonderful thyme scent.  Let it flower and go to seed to spread across your lawn.

  2. Hi:

There are several good Thyme varieties that would work as ground covers and also for your lawn. Mother of Thyme would work but use the Creeping Mother of Thyme. Here are a few more suggestions:

    Woolly Thyme

    Caraway Thyme

"Annie Hall", it only grows three inches high.

    Creeping White Thyme

    Coconut Thyme

These would all do well for you. I will link you to the spices and herb section. You may get additional information from some of these pages. Hope this helps some and have a great day!

  3. Any creeping thyme will do.  They can take the abuse of being walked on and smell really good when you do.  They spread very nicely and are easily pulled apart if they start growing over an area or a stepping stone you don't want them on.
