  1. The new front loaders seem to be catching on.  They're quite expensive but they will take heavy items such as comforters and blankets, but the energy efficiency is still a dream.

  2. Front load washers are best for energy effiicency. Since all dryers are front loaders, the ones that match the washers in appearance may not automatically be the most efficient.

Check energy star ratings and the yellow tags on the appliances. That will give a lot of info about energy use.

For heavy items you want an extra large washer/dryer. Check the cubic foot measurements when you go to buy.

I wouldn't completely dry blankets and comforters, but hang dry them. Just put in the dryer a few minutes to fluff them.

I don't know of any washers that steam clean.

  3. I have always relied upon Sears Kenmore washers and dryers.  They are actually manufactured by Whirlpool, (so I recommend this brand as well) and have a good repair record.  Get a large capacity set so that you can fit comforters in the wash barrel.  If it is too tight of a fit, then the stuffing may get wadded up during the wash cycle.
