I would like to pursue a degree in marine archeology to search for ancient shipwrecks in and around northern Europe - I am especially fascinated by the preservation of shipwrecks in the Baltic Sea and would like to concentrate my studies in that area. I don't mind going to one school for the anthropology degree, and then another for my phd in my interest if that makes difference.

  1. I do know that Washington College has some marine archaeology and the Maine Maritime Academy is working on delivering some sort of program in this area.

However, if you don't have a bachelors yet, I would recommend a program that can give you a good archaeology background with your anthropology degree first.  I think Washington College has that.  There are a number of other good schools out there too.

The University of Wyoming has a good archaeology program, but they tend to focus on Plains cultures.  I was told that the University of Pennsylvania has a great program for archeology outside the US.

I'm not sure if these are the best programs, but they are a start.  I hope it helps.

  2. I'm sorry - I don't know, but I would love to find out, too! That sounds amazing. I hope you find the right program for you.

    Here is one:

Welcome to the Homepage of the Maritime Studies Program at East Carolina University. The Program offers a master's degree in maritime history and nautical archaeology. Combining classroom lectures and seminars with hands-on field projects and internships, the Maritime Program provides a thorough education for those interested in a professional career in maritime history and nautical archaeology.

I'd also check out U.C. San Diego.

Texas A &M Anthropology department also has a specialty in Nautical Archeology.

The Graduate School of Oceanography (GSO) of the University of Rhode Island offers instruction leading to the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), the Master of Science (MS) and the Master of Oceanography (MO) degrees in the classical areas of oceanography - biological, chemical, geological, and physical - as well as in interdisciplinary and related areas such as atmospheric chemistry. In addition, joint degree programs are offered in Archaeological Oceanography, in Business Administration, and in Marine Science and Policy.
