  1. Wouldn't it be difficult to be a 'best place' if it was unvisited?  The Yucatan Peninsula is huge and is filled with dozens of beautiful and interesting places that are "seldom visited" by tourists.

Hidden gems of Yucatan, such as Tulum, Akumal,Uxmal, Ticul,Chetumal, Chichen Itza, Merida and Valladolid,to name just a few of the better known places, offer an authentic taste of Mexico. Akumal and more Caribbean-style Chetumal, near the Belize border, deliver beautiful white-sand beaches and great snorkeling. Merida, Chichen Itza,Uxmal and Tulum, with their ancient ruins, offer a passage into the Yucatans native history. Nature lovers can jungle trek and swim in subterranean sinkholes filled with crystal-clear water or bike around the ruins and hop between mayan towns in colectivo vans.

There is no shortage of places to see and things to do on the peninsula and there is a great deal of information readily available on the Internet describing many of these "seldom visited" sites and attractions.Have fun discovering and visiting them!

  2. Look into the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve or Calakmul.

  3. Are you looking for a place where you won't bump into another gringo?  Then I'd say Campeche on the Gulf of Mexico side of the peninsula.  If you're just thinking of the Caribbean side,  then I'd say Punta Allen is one of the least visited by gringos.

  4. About 30 minutes from Merida on the Gulf coast is the pueblo of Telchac.  There is a ruin there named Xcambo and also 1000's of Pink Flamingos in their natural habitat.  AMAZING place to visit and away from the touristy areas.  We stayed at a place called from Sandcastle Shores which was literally minutes from the ruin and flamingo preserve.

  5. Itzamal is cool. All the colonial buildings in the centro are all painted yellowish gold. It's very pretty, plus there's a great view from the top of a pyramid right in the middle of town.

Merida is very nice. Lots to see there as far as colonial buildings and museums. North of Merida there is Dzibilchaltun, the museum there is interesting as are the ruins and the Cenote there is different since the water is at ground level.

You could swim with whale sharks at  Isla Holbox.

You could go to a hacienda, Sotuta de Peon south of Merida is very interesting. It's a tour of a working hacienda. You swim in cenote and have can have lunch there after your tour.

Other hacienda's have been restored and converted into luxury hotels.  Hacienda Xcanatun north of Merida is worth checking out, the grounds are beautiful and the restaurant is great. I'm sure that there are others that are equally nice but I have not personally been there.

But for unvisited, check out Hacienda Yaxcopoil. The main house is in decent shape but most of the machine buildings are unrestored. There is a room that has some Mayan pottery that was found on the grounds of the hacienda. You used to pass through the town with the same name on your way to Uxmal from Merida but they have since built a highway to bypass the small town, it was almost always empty before and I can't see that the new highway would have helped.

For ruins, if you are going to take Rhino's suggestion of Campeche then check out Edzna, to my knowlege they are the most impressive ruins in that area.

  6. IslaMujeres.  it's island off of cancun. you can reach it by ferry.
