reliability, purchase price, fuel economy, ability to transport tools and materials, towing ability are the things I deem important.

I'm looking for responses from people with experience.

  3. Open bed pick up with a trailer that you can lock.  There are times when you need to carry things that cannot get wet and a van or covered bed truck sounds good, but more often you will need the height and length flexibility the open bed gives you.  And if you need to go into a store and have tools or materials in the truck they are subject to theft and weather.  An enclosed, lockable trailer solves any drawbacks to the open bed truck.  Good luck.

  4. Probably a van, without side windows for safety & protection.

Install a roof-rack for carrying long pipes & lumber.
