  1. Value is tough on the packaged HT stuff.  Usually they are limited in flexibility and value comes from flexibility, resale value and most important, SOUND.  I prefer separates, as they can be upgraded easily and sound best hands down.  More complicated, yes, but I love that complexity.  My current setup is a B&K 50 S2 processor, Bel Canto EVO G2 amps, Totem Tribe 3 speakers.

Get your speakers first. For speakers, check out KEF, Paradigm, EPOS, the pricier Polks, and Totem makes a low end model worth checking out, the Tribe 1.  Speakers from electronics manufacturers kinda suck.  Stick with the good manufacturers that build speakers as a primary product line, not thrown in with a receiver.  I'm not a fan of Bose stuff - for impactful sound you gotta move air and those little cubes don't cut it, IMO.

Then get a receiver (a receiver has the amps built into the chassis) - Integra, B&K, Cary is really good but pricey.  Stay away from Japanese brands unless you like screechy sound.

Check out audiogon.com or videogon.com for used deals or dealer demos.

  2. It depends on the price but i would highly recommend this 7.1 surround system it's good price and great sound.
