Don't tell me to use a small wagon of some sort. I'm looking to build a tank out of a full sized automobile

  1. Ahh, you playing in one of these big senario games??

Use a dune buggy, put the protective sheild on the sides and in the front.

Then cut holes in the front for the driver and passenger to see.

Also, make room for the gunner in the back and put a gun and a protective bubble around him.

  2. We are in the process of building a tank - kind of a slow process but hopefully we will get it done one of these days.  We are using an E250 Van.  We have put some super swampers on the tires blacked out the wheels.  Used Plywood and screwed it into the van to make the shape we wanted.  We are now to the point of needing to add the guns, cut out windows, put windows in the front(Use Plexan I think that is what it is called) - Then paint.

  3. A tank, eh? Wow, you have an imaginative mind!

I would be wary of using a street legal vehicle for the simple fact it is rather big, and not to mention very dangerous. Maneuverability will be important, so I would go with something that is agile, and light.

Are you thinking of using tracks, or wheels? Tracks will pose all sorts of challenges for you, so wheels may be the best alternative, and least costly, and most easy to repair/replace.

I would suggest a go-kart as a base vehicle. You can either build yourself one, or buy one, and modify it. It just depends on how industrious you are, and what kind of shop you have. If you have a full set of tools, a welder, access to some pipe, and all that go for building one. That way you can have it the way you want it right from the start.

Another idea is to see if you can find one of those 6 wheeled, skid-steer amphibious contraptions. I have seen a few of them around, but it has been a while. That would gve you a more realistic tank feel, as it is already set up with skid steering. It doesn't have tracks, but it does have 6 wheels, and will turn around in it's own space ( zero turn radius), so when you get into a tight spot, you can just spin around and go the other way without backing up, or getting out of it to turn it around by hand.

I would be very interested in seeing what you come up with. Keep me informed, OK?

    Good luck, Steve.
