What is the best vehicle to get for under $5000?

I think any $5000 dollar car is a big risk so your best bet is to buy a make that makes the best new cars.  I only drive Subaru's and they can easily go over 200,000 miles with basic maintenance.  Then there's the Toyota's and Honda's.  Depends on how big a car you want.  A Civic or Carola would probably still have life in it for 5000.  KIA has a pretty bad resale value so you might be able to find a decent 04 or 05 for that price.

With gas prices being what they are, if you don't want a car bigger SUV prices are plummeting - Explorers and the like aren't selling for anywhere near book value because people want better mileage as the price of gas skyrockets.

Since you state you don't want a car, I assume you want an SUV, so look around, there are lots to choose from, just be prepared to pay at the pump.
