the best video EDITING software i would have to say Sony Vegas Pro 8 because it is feature rich as a standalone product.

to all the people that said Premiere, yes I am a Premiere CS3 user but no, Premiere was not intended to be used as a standalone product (meant to be used with after effects and audition/soundbooth) and as such it is overpriced for what it can do alone.

windows movie maker is kind of the best i have come across. It is easy to download unlike avs. (I tried that to)

there are lots of facilities on windows movie maker including lots of backgrounds and animations!

WMM does not work with all formats either.  I have downloaded a format changer that sorts out all those sorts of problems.  Super (c) is the best free one, but not the most straightforward.
