  1. Adobe Premiere Pro or AVID.  Both are High-definition (HD)capable.  Premiere will allow both HD and standard definition on the same timeline.  Many people prefer AVID, I never really got into it when I used it - I found Premiere to be much more intuitive.  Good luck!

  2. How long is a piece of string?

As Pon said...Avid or FCP..or Premiere. It's all down to how you work. As for "No country for old men" and FCP giving Avid a run for it's money that's a bit premature I think seeing as 99% of all broadcast and feature films are cut on Avid. I use Premiere with  Matrox Hardware as well as Avid. If it's broadcast I cut on Avid as the stations prefer it that way a lot of the time if time-finishing is needed, but around Europe I've noticed a serious amount of broadcast stations installing Premiere Pro machines for finishing outside projects..which makes it easier for me. I used FCP for a good few years but now I reckon Adobe have them nailed..for the time being with Premiere CS3 handling HD for SD output much better than FCP. Avid have problems in Europe with JVC ProHD cameras which makes a lot of us pretty p*****d off. (soon to be fixed) That means at the moment I'm cutting a general release feature on Premiere/Matrox using HD 720p25 and digitized16mm footage all working well together.

At the end of the day...the NLE is the hammer which you use to bash the nail in. The end result can be the same but it's how you wield the the hammer and how comfortable it feels that can help your creativity. Try them all for yourself. Just go along to your local video producer who cuts broadcast or even visit your local broadcast station and see it all in action...and talk to the guys using it. Most will be on Avid at work but their own work at home they sometimes use Premiere or FCP for personal projects.

    I hope that helps.

Best of luck with your projects.

  3. Why would you want anything besides Sony Vegas? It's perfect, if you ask me. There are a lot of pro audio editors that come with video editing now. Perhaps Cubase or Sonar, I believe.

  4. Premiere is the best on the PC, period.

  5. SInce "pc" is a generic term for a "personal computer" and Apple Macintoshes are personal computers, then I would say FinalCut Pro 2.

  6. Sony Vegas is junk.  The best programs out there are Avid (the industry standard) and Final Cut Pro.

Avid has been around the longest (partly why its industry standard) but it is amazing due to hardware compatibility as well as color correction.  However, it is a bit buggy and the different versions do limit, to an extent, what you can do.

Final Cut Pro is closing in and giving Avid a bit of competition (No Country For Old Men was edited completely on FCP).  I feel its a bit more intuitive with what I want to do and now with Color, the color correction is much better and rivals professional color correction software.  However, FCP is only for Mac

Avid is both Mac and Windows based PC.

I use both and these are the absolute best programs for film and video editing.
