  1. You should definitely check out the Augusta, GA/North Augusta, SC area.  North Augusta is a smaller town but is located right across the river from Augusta so it has a small town vibe, but with all the amenities of a larger area.  The school system is really good, they have a great parks and rec department, a great walking/biking trail system (The Greeneway), very affordable housing, and a good library.  Augusta has several types of cultural attractions (art and history museum, science center, etc., symphony, opera, ballet, etc.)  Aiken, SC is in the same area (about 30 minutes from Augusta) and is also worth checking out.  And as far as acreage, Edgefield County, more specifically the "Sweetwater" area, has more of a rural feel but is very close to both North Augusta and Augusta.  This region is known as the CSRA (Central Savannah River Area) and is only 2.5 hours from Atlanta, about an hour from Columbia, SC, and just about 3 hours from various beaches and mountains.    I live in the area but some years back had done research in these same types of amenities in the western NC area, and Asheville, NC is definitely worth checking out too.
