What is the best way I should tell my boss that I am looking for another job?

I like my current job, but me and my wife hate the town we are living in. How should approach my boss about this?

I believe legally you only have to give two weeks notice. But if you are trying to be considerate, you can tell your boss that you are thinking of relocating to another town or state. You can state that you like your job but hate where you live.

Maybe you can work from home depending on your job. Or get a job transfer.

don't tell him.  there is a big risk that you will not find anything soon, and in the meantime, your value will diminish in the current job because you will not be given good assignmnets or raises, and your level of commitment/work quality could be questioned. no company would invest anything in someone they knew was looking to get out.

in the event of layoffs or slowdowns, you would be the first to go.

btw, how do YOU feel about the job and the town?  Maybe you should consider trying to compromise on this rather than giving up a good job and the security (i assume?) it affords. can you move to a nearby town and commute? Is your wife being reasonable?

Tough call...depends on how well you know the boss and company.  If you are with a large company I would approach your boss and mention if there were similar positions in other offices you would like to be considered.  But as a backup plan I would start looking externally myself...without telling anyone.  Once wind gets that you are looking your raises will be bad and you may be looked upon as a disgruntled employee.

Wow! We are going through the same exact thing.  My husband loves his job but I hate it here.  We actually moved here from another state almost 3 yrs ago.  Anyway, I asked my mother for her opinion and she said not to tell the boss that we are looking for another job until my husband gets a call for interviews.  Then when we get the call she said to be flat honest about why he wants to leave the job.  She said you never want to tell the boss before hand because even if you have a great relationship with your boss. His first priority is the company.  You don't want to run the risk of being replaced or fired without getting a new job.  The other issue is that if you think human resources are going to find out about you looking for another job, like in our case don't worry about it.  They most likely will not confront you about it but if they do, then tell them the truth.  So just apply and wait till you get a call then take it from there.  Good Luck!

Be up front and honest with him. Explain to him your situation. That way it won't be such a shock when you do leave. However, there is always a slight chance that your boss is not that understanding. The point is this. How well do you know your boss? Do you respect him? Are you an asset to the company?

DON'T.  Telling your boss that you're looking to get a new job could be a quick way to get fired before you are ready to give your two week notice.

Have you considered moving and commuting to your job from a longer distance.
