  1. Grab a copy of How To Win Friends and Influence People, by Dale Carnegie.  Read it, practice it.  It will make others happy.

Also The Greatest Saleman by Og Mandino.  Both have helped me greatly, even in everyday life.

    Best wishes.

p.s. and for all kinds of good reasons, Lose the Cigarette!

  2. The keys to success are KNOWLEDGE and LEADS, read everything you can get your hands on. Subscribe to life insurance selling and any other industry magazines you can get. You need to constantly read. If you are selling health insurance learn as much as possible about the major carriers in your state. Understand each companies strengths and weaknesses.

You need to spend money to make money. Purchase leads from people looking for the products you are selling. I suggest Vimo.com, they have websites that prospects visit to request quotes and then the lead is sent to you in real time.

But with that said if you don't have the skills you will not close very many sales. I found these very helpful:

CD's "How to master the art of selling anything" by Tom

    Hopkins

    http://www.tomhopkins.com/store/product....

"Prospecting you way to sales success" by Bill Good

    http://www.billgood.com/bills_book/

Remember listen to your clients, help them fill a need with what they need not what you need to sell.

  3. Focus on sales training - don't focus on building your knowledge. There will always be someone at the firm you are affiliated with who is on salary who knows this stuff and can help you. Become an expert later.

Try to align yourself with an experienced agent that you can mentor with. Ensure its clear you are mentoring and getting some sort of tutelage and you are not just a cold call slave for his business.

The key to the business is PROSPECTING. You must have a NATURAL MARKET of people who need life and health insurance and you must have ACCESS to that market. ie. do they see you as a respected professional or someone they can trust to help them out.

All the product knowledge experts starve quickly and brutally in this business, don't get sucked into the knowledge trap because it is easier than getting beat up by hearing "no" from prospects all day.

There is no way it should work this way but it does.

    Best of Luck.
