  1. Read a lot, and study vocabulary words everyday. Try to learn one new word a day, use it a few times throughout the day, and pretty soon, it'll be a part of your vocabulary.

  2. Read a lot -- particularly what schools would require for a literature course (Shakespeare, Dickens, Browning, Hemingway, etc.) and keep a dictionary by your side as your read.  Look up every word that you even have doubts about (even if it is familiar to you, but you've not used it often, or are not sure of the particular usage).

There are also books like "How to Improve Your Vocabulary in 30 Days" and so on.  Check one out at the library.  Let the library be your friend.  The best way is reading.

    Good luck!

  3. Read a lot.  It doesn't matter what you read really- books, newspapers, magazines, websites.  Everytime you see a word where you're not sure of the meaning, look it up and try to think of a way where you can use that word.

  4. Reading a lot of books in general would help you improve your vocabulary. However, some people doesn't really like reading books. I myself doesn't like reading books, but if it's related to things that interest me, I read it.

I can read books from cover to cover if it interests me. Try reading books that match your interest.

Chatting can also help improve your vocabulary. I do not like reading books ever since I'm a kid.. But when I learned how to chat, my vocabulary has improved.

Also, do not forget to check the dictionary when you find a new word. You may also want to keep a journal containing words that you've learned. You can review them weekly or monthly.

My brother and I were kind of different kids, because we absolutely loved doing homework and reading, even during the summer.  We used to get the dictionary and pick a word each week.  We'd look it up, and would find ways of adding it to our everyday conversation.  One word that stands out for me, is the word 'Nebbish'.  I really enjoyed using it on my brother that summer!

  7. read a dictionary.

  8. reading is more impt than listening.u should try to read more books, newspapers that gives u knowledge & also u will know what is going on in the world.if u are reading something,u should have full concentration on it & which u dont know the meaning that should be seen in the dictionary & try to use in the general speaking, that way u will enhance speaking & side-by-side u will increase your vocabulary.

  9. I like the one about reading and then looking up any words you don't know. It works with anything though. If you hear a word and you don't know what it means you can do this as well.

  10. read a wide variety of things. Even office memos and legal documents. They give great wording that can be used.

  11. When i was studying for my sat's in HS, I bought this book that had drawings about the word, the definition of the word and a sentence that had the word in it. I forgot what the book was called but it really helped!

something else that helps me is that when i am reading for school or reading in general, I hi-lite the word, put the word in the margin or on another piece of paper, look up a word in the dictionary and then go back and re-read AND re-write the sentence so that i can better understand it
