  1. AVE, the highspeed train, does not in fact connect Alicante and Madrid. It's routes are Madrid-Barcelona, and Madrid-Sevilla-Malaga. The normal train takes around 4 hrs and costs about 40 Euros each way, give or take. You can take the train from either Atocha or Chamartin stations in Madrid. Though I would recommend keeping an eye on the iberia.com (iberia.es) website as they often have fares that compete with the train, and the flight would be no more than an hour or so. Driving is also a good option, like he said up there, a trip through La Mancha is great, get off the main road for a bit and drive through the small farming communities. Of course you can take the bus too, but it is not a heck of a lot cheaper than the train, the main company on the route is alsa. Search and I'm sure you'll find them.

  2. That would depend on how much time you had. Personally if I was on holiday and had the time I would drive there. There is so much to see along the way. Most holidaymakers here stay close to a beach, but they miss the best bits inland (the real Spain)

  3. There is a bus: www.alsa.es It takes about 5 hours and it maybe $30. Also, you can check the train schedules at www.renfe.com.

  4. There are excellent trains (Atocha and AVE) in Spain so don't be afraid to use them, of course it will be slower than flying so I wil depend on how long you have and if you want to see some scenery.Check out the atocha website (google) or www.europeanrail.com.The domestic airline Iberian airway swill have flights so it might be worth checking out their website too.

  5. You can fly.  The flights I just found were round trip for about $200, but if you check Ryanair, or any of the discount European airlines, you are sure to find one at oneway, if you want, for around $50 US.

If you take the train, take the AVE.  It's SOOOO fast, and it's like being on a luxury airplane...it's worth it just for the experience.
