What is the best way of deterring pigeons from roosting on your property?

We have pigeons that roost on a roof underneath our bedroom window. Every morning when it starts to get light they wake us up. Has anybody got any ideas of how to get rid of them? We have tried a fake owl, but that hasn't worked. Also we are reluctant to put spikes up as it is a rented property. Can anyone help?

Put down hot peppers on the roof. It deters most pests without hurting them at all.
