if its thinset you can use muratic or hydrochloric acid mix with water 1 part acid three parts water be sure to check for staining in an inconspicuous area rinse well after scrubbing with a wire brush and wear eye protection and rubber gloves if its an adhesive such as liquid nails you can use a solvent like acetone but even gasoline will soften the glue be sure to use protective equipment with solvents as well

If you are struggling Spirits of Salt (dilute hydrochloric acid) available most chemists  will disolve cementitious grout.  Use neat, and apply carefully - avoid inhaling fumes.

I have used a nylon abrasive wheel that I attached to my drill.   Do not use a steel bristled wheel as this may scratch the tile.

You could use mineral spirits to soften the mastic, but I have found that good old "elbow grease" works best with a nylon pot scrubber and water.

Thinset should chip and scrub away with water.  You can use miratic acid    ---   as a last resort.

first lever off what you can using a paint scraper then scrub with a kitchen scourer thats only damp. also try those melamine stain erasers. best to soak the tiles /grout with water first as it is darker easier to spot and comes off easier.

1st the adhisive.. Regular thinset can be taken off w/ a WHITE nylon pad wet w/ water.. Scraping off the excess 1st w/ fingernail or carefully w/a stainless steel putty  knife. Carefull as not to leave marks on the tile.. 2 nd the grout..  1st try to do grout dry w/white nylon pad, this ll get the haze off and  for more stubborn grout/haze p u a grout/haze remove aval. at most tile places  mom and pop hardware stores and the big box stores  GL
