What is the best way to attract more people to a forum?

Hi all,

I'm an admin on a forum. I was wondering what would be some good ideas to attract more people to come and to stay. At the moment, it's a gaming forum but we do have other areas like general discussion, debates, etc. I'm curious to hear some ideas about this. Thanks. :)

a forum user will only join if there is a purpose or if there is a lot of information being exchanged.

for example if you have a service or product and want the community of buyers to help one another the forum can be easily marketed and filled with users

if there is a lot of information being exchanged then users will join because of it being social - forum is very hard to market since it is a community and user base
