  1. If you are interested working in the transportation department (i.e., engineer or conductor) consider becoming certified as a conductor.  With the way the industry is booming right now it is very likely you will receive an interview (sometimes right on the spot!).

  2. find their website and the employment within and keep your application current

  3. This website will allow you to view and apply for jobs, and input a resume:

Alco is right, if you want to advance to be an engineer or yardmaster or some type of transportation job, you will need to start as a freight conductor and learn the job.  You then get selected for engineer training later, when you know how the job generally operates.  On the above website, search for Conductor under the "Craft - General Skills" category.

You will see that New England/New York/New Jersey are hiring for cuonductors currently, although other regions may hire at any time.  Some places, like Evansville IN or Detroit have been laying off workers for the summer, so you will need to check back to see when they start hiring again.

Due to expansion and many retirements of current employees, rails are looking like a good field for new hires.  See these sites for more info:

  4. Before you decide to pursue a career as a railroad employee you should know what you are getting into.

I have been employeed as a locomotive engineer for a class 1 railroad for approx.10 years so I know what I'm talking about.Get ready for a drastic change in your lifestyle because your never going to know when your going to be called to work, your not going to know when you will return home, and when you get home you will not know how long it will be before they call you back to work.

When the railroad is busy,in my experience,I'm usually home for approx 10 to 12 hours, and away from home for a day and a half to two days, they demand a majority of my life.

I can't complain about the pay,it is pretty good considering I don't have a college education,I make quite a bit more money than most of my friends with a college education. The health care is better than most employers, and it does have a pretty good retirement.

I see that alot of the responses you have recieved have numerous web sites, most of which I would have used myself,so I am not going to submit any,but think long and hard about taking a position as a railroad employee, especially if you are a family man(or woman).Good luck.
