there are a lot of companies that will train you for free - however, you have to sign a contract to work with them for 1-2 years. CRST, Swift, Pam transport, USA, all provide training.

Schneider, Swift, Covenant take on and train new drivers, but is a TERRIBLE way to enter the bsns. You'll driver at a lower rate 'as a way to pay the company back.' Actually it is very similar to Indentured Servants. You work for a year at this fairly low pay. Ironically, if you go into a CDL School Mill, each company will re-imburse you for the cost of going to school, plus you'll not be under an obligation and start at a higher cents-per-mile. There is still more to undergo after obtaining you CDL.

Put a posting on Craigslist indicating that you are looking for a (current or retired) truck driver to coach you through taking the CDL exam. Once you acquire the CDL - then go to a decent OTR carrier who has an excellent training program, i.e. Schneider, Swift, etc. and stay with that company for a year. After one full year of driving experience, you'll have your pick of local jobs.
