Question:

What is the best way to bustle a wedding gown?

I've seen the French, the Austrian, and the under-gown ones, and I'm not getting a Do-It-Yourself vibe here. I'm thinking of just having a wrist loop attached, since the gown weighs 11 pounds and I don't know if hooks or buttons will hold up.

  1. I agree with Joy, the bridal salon bustles the dress while you're in it, and that's how they know where to place to hooks.  Properly done, it will hold up because the professionals know how to do it.

  2. Take the dress to an alteration shop and get an opinion from a professional. They may have a whole other idea of what to do. You don't want an 11 lb. dress pulling on you all night. I'm sure there is something that can be done. Just ask a professional. Good luck.

  3. Couldn't tell what your dress looked like from the link.  You should have loops and buttons or ties put onto the dress for a bustle.  Call bridal shops and ask if they just do bustles and how much they charge.  They can show you several different styles and I imagine there will be one that is absolutely fabulous and that you'll love.  A bustle will be more comfortable than a wrist loop.  Someone will need to be shown how to bustle you on the day of your wedding; make it a special responsibility for someone.

Safety pins and needle and thread are part of an emergency kit for the wedding day so if something does come loose, it can be given a quick fix.

  4. No, no, no to the wristloop!  Just think of how tired your arm is going to be carrying that around.  A wristloop also severly limits your movements.  It's extremely hard to hold a drink and then go and try and hug someone with your arm weighed down with 11 pounds!

You don't have to go to a bridal salon to get the bustle put in.  A lot of independent seamstresses will know how to do a bustle and for cheaper than a bridal salon.  For ideas of bustles, check out these webpages:

    Good luck!

  5. I am getting the bustle done at store. I would just find some pictures of ones you like and have a seamstress do it.

  6. If the train is that heavy, than it needs more that one bustle. Don't do the wrist loop unless you're willing to hold that heavy gown up all night. I've seen many brides have heavy gowns and they have two bustles. I think my gown is going to have 2 bustles, but I think that's because the train is slightly longer than I am tall. Having an expert do it is the best thing.

  7. The bride Solon always shows you how to bustle the dress at the last dress fitting!

    All dresses are done differently!
