What is the best way to clean a computer key board.?

My granddaughter spilled something sticky on it. I tried using some canned air and that got a lot of it out, but some of the keys still stick. Should I have a professional clean it ? Can you take it apart and do it yourself? Any suggestions?

  1. Compressed air does work the best, and every key on a standard keyboard is removable. You can remove them with a flat-head s***w driver. Start with the bottom row, pry up. The spacebar, Enter keys, and shitf keys have little metal bars  attached because they are large and are not always pressed down in the same spot. these can still be removed in the normal way, they just take a little bit more care to put back on.

Once you have them off, and !!**laid out in order**!! so there are no mistakes, use a wet wash cloth and clean every key and the board itself. GL.

  2. I'm old school, every so often i pop each key out and then wash each one soap and water and then let then air dry overnight in front of a fan.

When popping your keys out I find it easier to use a butter knife and slide it under the key then twisting the blade until it pops out. This way your won't damage the metal pins underneath the keys such as the space bar, shift, enter keys. Cleaning the board is simple enough(make sure it's not connected to your machine) , a q-tip (or several) and rubbing alchohol (dries faster).

Oh bring up your on screen keyboard before doing anything, this way you have a referance on where to put the keys back.

Should be able to find it under accesories.

  3. Take a picture of the keyboard that clearly shows all of the keys.  Then you may use a screwdriver to gently pop the keys out of the board.  Put all of them in a ziploc baggie with water and dishdetergent.  Shake them gently for about ten minutes, then dump the soapy water and fill with fresh water to rinse.  Allow the keys to dry completely and pop them back into place according to the photo you took.

Don't remove any pieces of wire that you find attached to the keys as they work as a spring to make heavier, long keys spring back up after being pressed.

  4. Hi,

Yes you can pop the keys on and off just like a Rubik cube. I recommend using windex wipes to clean the keys off before putting them back on.

Also just try using the wipes without taking the keys out. Or you can also try lysol disinfectant wipes. They all work similarly.
