What is the best way to clean a pair of tennis shoes?

I have a brand new pair of shoes that i stepped in a mud puddle and would like to clean them using my washing machine. My dryer has a shoe rack for drying but my washer is one of those new eco-friendly ones that uses less water. can I still use it?

ARe they white leather? I use the magic eraser pads on mine. Cleans them up just like new...

Vaseline works well, especially on leather and rubber.
