Question:

What is the best way to clean the tarnished platinum on my platinum-rimmed china?

The dishes are not safe in the dishwasher and so I always hand-wash the china and place it back in the protective sleeves. I noticed last week that some of the plates are tarnishing around the rim, which is platinum. I tried washing them again but no luck! Any help is greatly appreciated!

  1. The platinum is so thin on china - you might be seeing where it is worn away and not tarnished.

If your china is precious to you take a piece to a reputable jewelry store and ask the jewelers advice.

Any thing you buy in the store to clean platinum is going to be too abrasive for the thin coat. If someone tell you to try vinegar or lemon juice - remember those are weak acids and will further deteriorate the finish. Do not use tooth paste or baking soda - those are abrasive.
