Let's say, theoretically, that I came into possession of a handgun whose history I'd rather not know, for various reasons.

What is the best way to destroy the weapon in such a way that it is gone for good?

What temperature of torch would be required to melt the average handgun?

Which acids are particularly good at dissolving metals?

Go into the nearest police station and leave it there

Easy answer.  Call the police and say you found a handgun in an empty lot and would like to turn it in.  They will come and get it, it will be destroyed, and you are free and clear.  Just don't take it to the police station because you might be misunderstood when you take it out to show them.  Don't try to dispose of it yourself because if it is a crime weapon you could be in a lot of trouble if someone finds out  you disposed of it.  Good luck!!
