  1. It would be assumed that your wireless camera already has an antenna inside it.  But if you want to try hooking up a home-made external antenna, the ½ wavelength of the 2.4 Ghz band would be about 2½ inches, or approx 6¼ cm.

There are three components to UHF (300 Mhz - 3 Ghz) signals.  There is the ground wave, which is probably what you're mostly dealing with.  It's transmission range is extremely short, low to the ground, and attenuates quickly.  Then there is the surface wave, which is the primary useful transmission of TV and FM radio broadcasts.  And the sky wave which simply radiates out into space.

So, to extend the range of your antenna, you need to have the correct wavelength (or actually ½ wavelength), higher transmission point, and correct polarization.  IF you're not sure about the polarization of the receiving antenna, then orient your transmitting antenna at a 45° angle.

Be careful.  In the U.S., the FCC specifically prohibits not only the power of an unlicensed transmitter, but also the antenna height as it applies to range.
