Tips and advice please. When I cut it on the ground I am only armed with scissors and the material becomes haggard.

Thanks,

  1. use a ruler/yard stick to draw your straight line......

  2. go to fabric stores or wallmart and watch and ask these people how they cut fabric.  After watching, and I watch a lot, I could do it just as good as they could.

  3. I long metal or wood ruler and a utility knife with a fresh blade.

  4. If you are trying to cut all the way across a piece of material, snip an inch or two into the fabric in the direction of the cut then put down the scissors and pull apart with equal force on either side of the cut - the fabric should split in the direction you made the initial cut.  I buy fabric from fabric stores and that is how they do it in there.

Note:  you might want to try this method out on some rags just to be sure you get the technique down before doing it on the material itself.

Otherwise, use a taught string as your guide to draw a faint chalk line which will give you a straight line.  The chalk should just wipe off when you are done.

    Hope this helps! :-)

  5. Jess any straight edge will do you a good.  I would lay the material on flattened cardboard box and use sharp utility knife.

    Good Luck

  6. Measure, measure, measure. If it has a pattern, this can help to line things up. Make a dot at each point, close together. Also, sharp scissors and iron the fabric first.
