What is the best way to discover Munich?

The central city walking and bike tours are good, but I like to hop on the "trolleys" at the haptbahnhof and just ride them and look at the city, went all over the place and they all come back to the same spot. Got to see some stuff tourists don't usually see.

I lived in Munich for ages and thought I had really experienced it all, until my International school took my class on the Mike's Bikes bike tour (I believe their offices are located just near the Hofbrauhaus, but they're sure to have a website). Over the past several years they have become one of the most popular tours in Munich for english-speaking tourists, and is appreciated by all ages. They are also very affordable and easy-going. You're given an 'old-school' bike to ride throughout the tour (very 50s/60s!) and each of the tour guides are fun-loving and are there to show you the humourous, exciting side of Munich, by sharing with you the history of the main landmarks around the city area from a fresh, humourous and young perspective. The guides are all people in their 20s and 30s, and are mainly from the States, but I also met a few from England and Australia. I guarantee that you will have a good time, as I certainly did, and realised after 9 or 10 years of living in Munich, just how much I has been missing out on - such as cute parks and cobblestone backstreets with hidden cafes/restaurants around the city center, as well as fun-facts about such landmarks as the Glockenspiel, Odeonsplatz, Opera House and Englischer Garten. The tour I took lasted most of the day, with a relaxing stop in the Englisher Garten at the Chinesischer Biergarten for the complete Bavarian dining experience, though I'm sure there are a variety of tours of different lengths. And the fact that you're all on vintage bicycles is just an added bonus, that'll keep you smiling and giggling!

The best way to discover Munich is to walk around Town and have a local show you all the Hotspots.... do like rachel ray does on her 40 dollars a day trips the locals always know the best places to go see...when i was in Munich i had to make sure i went to see Garmisch Patenkirchen which is very close but it's breathtaking with all the Mountains... I envy you..!!! Take me with you!!!!!!!!!

Ah!!! Munich, I was there last May... go into Marianplatz, and sign up for either the 2.5 hour walking tour, or 4 hour bike tour or both! The reason for this is that right away you will have an overview of the city centre, get an idea of where things are etc.. plus you have the benefit of a guide to answer all your questions, and you will get to meet other travellers etc..

The best way is definitely using the subway.  Metro and the "S-Bahn",  I believe.  Take it and get out at Marienplatz.  From there you can see many attractions.  The old Rathaus is right there, and off to the right, in a back alley is the world famous Hofbräuhaus.  PLEASE don't miss that!  You'll get to experience true old Germany.   Then the Frauenkirche is off to the left.  (You can see them if you stand infront of the large Kaufhaus across from the Rathaus and look to your left.  You should walk that road all the way to Isartor.  Also, from Marienplatz, going south, you'll come to a large street and on the right is a palace and the famous Englisher Garten.  Very bohemian.  Walk around in there til you find the Chinesische Turm.  Have a nice maß of Augustiner and  yummy Nürnberger Bratwursts.  Best to get yourself a map with all of the local attractions for tourists.  But Marienplatz is definitely a good place to start.
