  1. The best way, in my opinion, is to back comb your hair.

    1. Section your hair into 1"by 1" little squares. Secure with tiny rubber bands.

    2. Get a very fine toothed comb, flea combs work best.

    3. Start at the end of your hair, the tip farthest away from your head, and comb backwards while twisting the hair. The goal is to get it as tightly knotted up as possible.

    4. Do this all over your head. Don't be surprised if it takes 8 hours, it depends on how long your hair is.

    5. DO NOT USE WAX! It builds up inside the dread and that's where the gross smell comes from. After awhile the wax breaks down the dread from inside. It is best to just give it time to lock up, but this can take years. Patience is a big part of having dreads.

    6. If you want, you can secure the ends of your new dreads with rubber bands like you did on the roots. Some people don't like to do this because it restricts movement, and dreads need a lot of movement to lock up.

    7. Probably don't wash your hair for a week or so. Or if you do, try a shampoo like Dr. Bronners (http://www.drbronner.com/ pay no attention to the crazy rambling on the side of the bottle, this stuff works!)

    8. Wait. For like a year. Not even kidding dude.

    9. Take out the rubber bands when you feel like it.

I don't know much about dread perms, but I do know that it does ruin your hair. Having a lot of strong chemicals on your head tends to fry the hair, but fried hair is good for starting dreadlocks. Fried hair long term? That could make your dreads break off pretty easily. Plus it's expensive, about $80 an hour!

And dreading naturally? People with the patience find it very rewarding. The dreads will rarely look uniform, you might end up with one huge beaver tail and a bunch of little stragglers.

Hope this helps and have fun!

  2. Stop brushing or combing your hair, add wax.
