What is the best way to dress while seeing Florence, Italy?

Can someone give me some guidelines? I'm not traveling with a tour group, just one other person. I understand that locals don't usually wear sneakers, so that's a sign that you're a tourist. What other things should I know? Should I wear jeans for trekking the sights? Khakis? I'll know to keep camera hidden, but what other things should I know to not identify myself as a tourist? Thanks!

  1. When in Florence, while it's "ok" to dress "US Casual", you will definitely feel like a tourist if you do.  Everyone in Forence, Rome, etc. dresses well.  Keep your personal belongings close to your body (wallet, cash, electronic equipment, etc.)  I was in Rome just after Thanksgiving last year and heard of a woman (in our travel group) who was pickpocketed on the subway- the thief went into her handbag, removed a change purse containing cash, replaced the purse in her handbag and made off at the next stop.  She didn't realize it until she went to make a purchase and saw that her cash was gone!

Don't worry about not identifying yourself as a tourist.  I think it's more important to be respectful to your fellow travelers and the locals.  Try to use the language as best you can- don't be ignorant and speak only english.  That will set you apart as a tourist.  If you're not sure how to say something in italian, ask.

  2. You'd wear a pair of jeans and a normal shirt. If  you don't like sneakers you'd wear a pair of sandals!

  3. i'm italian. if you leave soon in florence now is really hot. if you're not too tanned people will understand you're not italian. you should wear a t-shirt, shorts and a pair of slippers (you should buy them in florence). don't go sightseeing with a rucksack. by the night wear a pair of jeans and a shirt or a dress. i don't advice you to go trekking with jeans... it's very unconfortable, wear a skirt because it's very hot now.

if you leave during the next month wear a pair of jeans and a t-shirt. the secret is to wear simple clothes. bye

  4. uh i think no matter how you dress you'll still look like a foreigner. Besides your attitude will most likely give things away. But its hot in florence. So maybe you should wear dresses or either shorts.
