  1. Depending on the manufacturer of your ball, check their respective websites for their "drill sheets", which describes their different (basic and "pro pin") ball setups and different results of their various drill patterns.  One website, brunsnick.com, features videos of drilling patterns, but is exclusive to Brunswick bowling equipment.  Good luck, and google these websites for further info:

    Brunswick Bowling

    Storm Bowling

    Ebonite Bowling

    Columbia 300 Bowling

    Hammer Bowling

    Morich Bowling

    AMF Bowling

    Elite Bowling

    Lane Masters

    Roto Grip

    Track Bowling

  2. The best person to ask would be a pro at a pro shop. These guys can get pretty creative in drilling the balls and still keep them USBC legal. More goes into drilling a bowling ball than I could ever imagine. It depends on what type of a reaction you are looking for. If you want to ball to break early or late will depend on how the ball will be drilled.

A local bowling pro should be able to drill a ball based on your style of bowling and what your preferences are as to ball reaction.

    Hope this helps. Good luck.
