Question:

What is the best way to drive when followed by a police car?

Occasionally I will be driving along with the rest of the traffic, which in my state goes 5 m.p.h. above the speed limit everywhere (except in parking lots). The rare times I notice a police car following me, I feel a dilemma:

Should I continue driving normally, as that is the speed everyone else is going, so as not to slow down the traffic?

Should I slow down to the speed limit?

Should I move to the side, so the police can speed, as they frequently wish to do? (This is when the police car has no lights or siren going, of course).

Any highway patrol or police officers answering, please let me know who you are, so I'll know I'm hearing it from someone in the field.

Thanks.

  1. I follow speed laws.  However, DO NOT hit brakes.  Brakes implies you know you were speeding... it admits guilt.  Just ease off the gas slowly.  I also move to the other lane... cops are usually trying to pass.

  2. If it is a 2 lane road go the speed limit.  If it is a 4 lane road get in the right hand lane and let him get around you.

  3. They usually won't pull you over for 5 miles over the limit. It's too easy to successfully appeal such a small amount in court.

I live in Ohio and I have NEVER heard of cops giving a ticket for less than 10 miles over the limit. Most people here drive about 7 to 12 miles over the limit because we are still 65 on freeways and 55 on two-lane roads.

  4. well if its a city cop you should just stay your normal speed aslong as you arent going way over you should be fine. its the state patrol you have to watch your speed with. some cops will drive behind you and just follow you for awhile just to see what you will do. unless they have their sirens on you dont have to move but if you think you should then do it

  5. Just continue to go with the flow. And whatever you do, don't weave. He'll think you're drunk and likely pull you over. Oh, and always make sure your tailights and brake lights are working. They'll get you for that, too...

  6. well, drive the speed limit and let him pass you by.  if he's going to pull you over he will have put on the lights.

  7. i feel that u should move to the side so that the police can speed if there are 2 or more lanes... if there is only 1 lane, just drive normally.... i dont think u will get a ticket for driving 5 m.p.h above the limit...

note: 1) i am not residing in ur country..

              2) i am not a highway patrol police

              3)  i am only a driver who drives almost everyday for   10  years

  8. Drive safely.  If a string of cars is all going over the speed limit I might just pull them over one at a time, order them to stop (write down their tag) and then walk back writing tickets.  I've had as many as 5 over at the same time.

  9. Just go with the flo. He is not going to just pull you over if everone is going the same speed. I do not know a cop around that would ticket you for going 5 over, usually its 10 over that they will ticket you for.

  10. never slam on the brakes when u see them cause they now u were speeding right away ease of the gas a lil like someone esle said....keep going with the flow as long its not over %mph then the speed limit.......
