Question:

What is the best way to dry a sealed barn out?

I have an old barn that I'm going to put some machinery in that has had problems being stored in the past in a damp barn. I cant afford for this to happen again and was going to use a de-humidifier but someone told me that all it will do is dry the space out then continually encourage damp to be drawn through the walls. Is this correct?

Would low temp heating keep damp out or is there a better solution that wont bankrupt me?

Any help much appreciated.

  1. Set a huge bonfire in the middle of it...

  2. Rent your barn out. And find another place for your machinery. or Build another barn

  3. You will never dry the barn out until you find the source of the dampness fix that and the barn will dry itself.

Cause possibly soil to high on the outside walls, If the floor is concrete it may not have a plastic liner underneath but poured directly on the soil ( a sealant may fix this ) if a dirt floor nothing you do will fix this until a slab of concrete is poured,or the roof just may need sealing. Also check if you have down pipes from the gutters that they flow away from the barn.

Without seeing it I'm only making calculated guesses.

  4. Construct and seal a tent over the machinery and use the dehumidifier inside the tent.  This way there is less air to dry
