I'd avoid acid, the matter still exists but it can no longer be put to anything useful. A LOT of garbage can be composted. Plus, what are you going to do with the leftover acid? You'll spend 10 times what you earned to have it disposed of properly.

I say do what's been working. Keep what you want and bury the rest that isn't hazardous to the environment. Almost everything hazardous can be recycled.
