I am in the process of trying to get contact lenses. I previously scheduled and appointment with the Lenscrafters doctors and was unable to find a good fit.

This time around I would like to schedule an appointment with a "real doctor". I have checked for Optometrists in the area but the problem is there are so many doctors to choose from and I dont know how to choose.

I dont have any family or close friends who wear contacts. Is there an unbaised website I can search for a doctor? What is the best way to go about this?

  1. First, if you have insurance ask them. That is the BEST way to find your annswer.

If no insurance ask at the pharmacy counter of a major drug store. This gives you two good sources! First, they see the prescriptions from the optometrists in the area and hear from the patients. Second, most likely the people in the pharmacy wear contacts and can refer you. Good luck.

  2. you could try the American Optometric Association, they have a doctor search engine here http://www.aoa.org/x5428.xml you can even select practice emphasis and highlight contact lens.  not sure if that qualifies as an unbiased website.

of course, as mentioned above it would be best to see which providers are on your insurance to ensure they will give you coverage on the exam fee (at least partially, some insurances may not cover the full amt for a contact lens fitting)
