What is the best way to find out WHERE someone is buried in a cemetery?

other than the obvious- walking miles and ending up with a stiff neck!

  1. Most current cemeteries have indexes indicating where the bodies are buried (so to speak) and will give you a map indicating the general area of the burial you seek.

    Old cemeteries - you are pretty much on the hunt and peck system.


  2. Contact the office of the church, or town officials, depending on the type of cemetery.

    Is this a large, well kept cemetery or is in some small forgotten site in the country?

    Many cemeteries are listed in the phone book.  Have you tried calling for directions?

    I take photos of headstones for RAOGK and I have walked several cemeteries in the Twin Cities, usually with a map in hand.

  3. Go to the Sexton's office and ask for a map and the location of the cemetery.

  4. They all have offices with maps.  Tell them the name you are looking for and it should take them a minute to find where it is for you.
