Question:

What is the best way to fix a squeeky floor?

My squeeky kitchen floor has linoleum tile on it so I can't drive nails in it from the top. In the basement below I can get at the underside if I dismantle air conditioning ducts(I did this previously). There is only a small space between the ducts and the floor. Would wedges betweent the joists and the floor work? If not what other options do I have?

  1. Squeeks add character. leave them be.

  2. You will need a good wood glue (Gorilla Glue is best) a few 8 ft lengths of pine 2 x 2's (Actual size 1 1/2" x 1 1/2") boards and a box of 2' deck or wood screws. Cut the 2 x 2's to size so they will fit in the areas that are squeaking and lay down a bead of glue along the top and 1 side of the 2 x 2 you have cut.

Place the 2 x 2 against the bottom of the floor and against the floor joist (support) on the side. Place a s***w from the bottom of the 2 x 2 into the floor boards a minimum of every 12 inches if they run parallel or 2 screws to each floor board if they run perpendicular.

Have someone stand on the floor above the 2 x 2 to hold it down and s***w through the side of the 2 x 2 into the floor joist.

You will have better results if you pre-drill the s***w holes in the 2 x 2 before gluing.

If this isn't clear enough, feel free to email me from my profile page by clicking on my face  here. Good Luck

  3. Gorilla glue can swell best bet would be to shim it

  4. ok i had this problem too you have to walk over the floor and while you are walking when you hear the squeaks you put baby powder between the cracks. it will silence them and its safer than going under the floor... good luck!
