  1. What you will be applying for is Disability insurance. You also want to apply for SSI, but the difference is SSI is like welfare for people who are disabled and have not worked enough to earn enough credits to qualify for regular benefits.

Your disability has to prevent you from being able to work (they will assess your work history to find out if there's anything you can do) for at least 12 months.

It is a good idea to have a doctor and a good medical history already. But, if you don't, they will send you to a doctor.

Most people are denied the first time so make sure you file your appeal within 60 days of being turned down. That way, if you are subsequently approved, you will be paid back to the date you originally filed. otherwise you have to start all over again.

You may be able to file on your parents record, as a disabled adult child, but you pretty much have to have been afflicted from a young age. Ask about this when you to your local office.

  2. You want to get all your medical documentation together and apply with SSI.  I see someone already gave you the site to do that.  They are alot stricter about who they put on SSI (sometimes they are) so if you get turned down, appeal and keep fighting.  Most people don't do that which is what they want.

In the meantime, be sure you go to the doctor each time you have a health problem so your record will reflect the problems you are experiencing and how often you get sick.  Might want to buy a planner so you can keep track of appointments, meds and other information for your own records ~ also good documentation for later.

Go to the pharmacy and get a print-out of all the medications you've been prescribed, too, for however far back their records might go.  Might want to do that at the beginning of each year for the previous year just so your records will always be up-to-date.

When you go in for your appt with the SSI people, make sure you keep all original copies for your file but let them make copies of what you have for their records.

  3. You can file your application online by going to ssa.gov.  Click on the social security site and click on apply for benefits.  If you have a work record, you can apply for benefits in your own name if you are disabled.  You can collect disability benefits regardless of how much money you have or how much other house hold members have.  If you have been disabled since you were a child, you could possibly recieve benefits on your mother's record.  Making too much money only applies to ssi.  You can draw Social security without drawing SSI payments. Hurry, there are time limits on when you can apply.  Good Luck and be paitent.
