  1. You can take the subway from the airport and around Rome.  It's fast, not very expensive, and not as bad as some of the other posters have made it seem.  It's like taking the subway in any big city, yes it will be crowded and sort of dirty, and no you wouldn't leave money hanging out of your pocket, but it's not horrific.

I'd much rather take the subway than the bus.  It's much less complicated, it can get you close to just about anywhere within the city, and it's more reliable.

  2. Which airport? Fiumicino has a direct train to Termini, Ciampino has buses to Termini.

The best way of getting around Rome is to walk. You see everything that way, and Rome actually isn't very big - you can walk from one side of the ancient city (Vatican) to the other (Porta Pia, near the ancient Praetorian camp) in an hour. So I wouldn't bother with the Metro, unless you need to get somewhere in a hurry.

  3. The city buses are reasonably efficient; the subway is ugly and off-putting, but if you want to go where it goes, it's the fastest way to get around. Driving in Rome is unthinkable. To and from the airport, there is a direct train right from the airport to Termini Station in the centre of the city, and at the station you can catch the buses and subway. Beware of pickpockets.

  4. i have gone every year for the last 5 and this is what i have found.  arrange a car before you leave here, to pick you up at the airport.  I use  driver 2000.  they will pick you up and deliver you to your hotel.  it is much cheaper than a taxi.  once i am in rome i swear by the double decker bus.  it is good for 24 hours and takes you all around to the most popular spots.  i usually go all the way around once and mark on the map (they will give you one) the places i want to get off.  then i go around again getting off every time i want to go into something or just take a closer longer look.  they run every 15 minutes so there is no problem getting right back on.  it is about 25 euro for 24 hours and is the best way to get to see everything.  if you take the double decker don't miss an evening tour, it is breathtaking.  if you have time i would rent a driver for a day and have them take you around to the out of the way spots.  ask at your hotel desk or make arrangements with driver 2000, or whatever company you have pick you up at the airport, in advance.

  5. Take the train from the airport to termini subway station.  I take the subways most places, it is fairly safe...watch the pickpockets during rush hours and late at night...busses are good also.  be careful taking taxis, they will see you are a tourist and will try to scam you more often than not.
