What is the best way to get from Manchester airport to Whitehaven in Cumbria, preferably by train?

We are arriving at Manchester after a long flight, so want a route that has minimal changes and hassles - and we will have luggage with us. And can you please indicate a stie where we can find out about timetables?

You don't say when you will be arriving, or at what time of the day, but a look at the site reveals that there are trains during the day at 27 minutes past most hours from Manchester Airport station which will require only one change, at Barrow in Furness. There are other trains but they require changes at eithe Lancaster or Preston and again at Carlisle. Time of the journey do vary from between 3hr.45mins to 4hr30mins, depending on the service used - sometimes those with two changes are, in fact, speedier than the Barrow services. The ride along Morecambe Bay and the Cumbrian Coast are well worth doing, however.

Have made this journey a few times.  Best would probably Manchester Airport > Manchester Piccadilly > Carlisle > Whitehaven.  Try and get a Liverpool train from Manchester Airport as this will drop you on platform 13 which is the same platform you need to be on for Manchester Piccadilly to Carlisle

Just had a quick look for you fare for this monday pm  cheapest 44.40 nodoubt if booked a month before travel wouldbe cheaper

leave app every 40 mins some one change others 2 changes

Put railfares in search  you then go down the list to National rail enqs( about  fifth down from top of page)  dont book on first visit to the pages   take several looks and get happy with the site  and its quite interesting  then you willbe happy to book...knowing what you are doing
