  1. nj transit to NY penn Station and Amtrak to Stamford. fastest way.

or you have to go from NY Penn Station to Grand Cenrtral to get Metro North to Conn... more time and may you save a few coins

  2. By best do you mean lowest cost?  The choices above should answer that.

If you are schlepping bags, and can afford a few $ more, you might want to stick with an all-Amtrak routing.  Unfortunately most trains stop at either Princeton Jct or Stamford but not both.  You would need to transfer at Penn Station/NY.

I did find a listing for a Friday evening Amtrak train that stops at both stations - #136 - but if you want to travel any other time you'll need at least one transfer.

  3. BEST WAY WILL BE:

    If you prefer trains only

    OPTION 1:

Take NJT Train to New York Penn Station, walk or take M4/Q32 bus ($2) to Grand Central Terminal for Metro North's New Haven Line to Stamford.

Option 2: If you prefer to catch CT Transit I-Bus, from White Plains, take Harlem Line to WHITE PLAINS and paid $2.50 in cash (dollar bills accepted) and it's 28-30 minute ride to Stamford, CT.

    If you prefer buses/subways only.

Take NJT train to New York Penn Station, get 1-Day Pass $7 ($7.50 March 2nd), take M4/Q32 to Grand Central, take uptown (4) train to Bedford Park Blvd for Bee-Line 20. Ask for transfer to CT Transit I-bus and driver will give you MTA Transfer ticket which is good within 2 hours.

At last stop, White Plains TransCenter, Bee-Line will pull over on same lane as I-Bus departuring point, and show your MTA Transfer ticket from Bee-Line and you get on free ride within 2-hours. If it past expire time, fare is $2.50.
