  1. Military service, Experience with heavy equipment, and knowing someone helps. Not sure what companies run out there, but Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) Canadian Pacific (CP) Canadian Northern (CN) Norfolk southern are a few.

  2. another thing the railroads look for is shift work experience, since you will be working at different times, heavy equipment experience for the Remote Control operation. Military experience is nice, is because it shows the railroads you are committed to something. Also there are conductor training schools that can be attended and will help you out. The most acclaimed is the National Academy of Railroad Sciences in Overland Park, KS. I completed the conductor training program there and found it exactly what i needed to begin my career with the railroad. Also make sure your hubby can consistantly lift 50-75 lbs. as that skill will be needed to change out nuckles on the train when one breaks, and also he would be needing to carry that weight sometimes up to 2 miles, so endurance would help. I hope you find this info useful.

In your area the railroads are CN/IC, NS, CSXT, BNSF, and I think KCS runs there as well

  3. Be born to someone who works for railroad.Nepotism is their motto
