What is the best way to get in shape for Motocross racing? Cardio?

I'm 22, 6'2", and 220lbs. I'd like to go racing like I did as a teenager, but I've gained weight from poor eating habits and lack of exercise. I've changed my eating, but I dont know what sort of exercise would be appropriate. I would guess lots of cardio, but anything else?

Thanks,

Jack

  1. Ride, Ride, Ride, and did I say ride yet.

Seriously, I was in the same boat, and got back in shape by running, mourning biking, watching my diet, and doing circut training, but I still had to work my way into riding shape, and the only way to do that is too ride.

  2. Hey Jack,

-MX racers like Ricky Charmichael ride Mountain Bikes and Road Bikes to get into shape for the race season.  RC and Bubba Stewart also incorporate weight training for the upper body and lower body muscles.

-But as you said, Cardio and endurance training is the key!  Start off with an easy mountain bike ride and take a couple of spin classes at the gym.  Remember to take it easy during the spin class to slowly build up your cardio.  Then start weight training with machines at first (Nautilus, Pro-form etc.) then incorporate freeweights when you get use to the movements and weight lifting techniques.  Also remember to stretch before and after your work outs.  A flexible and stretched muscle will respond better to weight training, less prone to injury, faster recovery and less soreness.  Also your muscles will look leaner and longer.

Also try different cardio machines.  There are many types of machines available that not only work the legs but also the arms at the same time.  Hope this helps.  Good luck and keep it at 110%.

  3. Strength in your quads is useful in absorbing some of the impact of racing with your legs.  Squats and lunges are good for this.  Arm strength is important too since you will be pumping your handlebars quite a bit.  Think bench press, tricep extension, curls, military press.  Working your forearms will help develop stronger grip.  One thing a lot of people overlook, though, is training their abs.  Having a strong core is really beneficial since it helps maintain balance and stability.

  4. Do yoga its the bomb.
