What is the best way to get people to stop using plastic bags?

Question

I want to organize a campaign to affect the attitude of people at supermarkets so that the customers do not want plastic bags. By doing this we can get rid of plastic bags. Any idea or input on how or what can be done to reduce/get rid of plastic bags is greatly appreciated. Just think: what must be done so that I have my groceries in an eco-bag (instead of a plastic one) when walking out of the supermarket? Thanks!

Well, California is already trying to do that.  They are going to start banning paper and plastic. If they do, they have to pay for them.  I can't remember when it is going to go into effect.  Many of the grocery stores now offer recycled bags for sale for 99 cents or less with their logos on them of course.  I usually walked to the store and packed my groceries in my backpack.  The bags are made of recycled plastic and are really nifty, the handles are wider and don't hurt my hands as much as the plastic bags did.

Have each grocery store print their logo on canvas bags, and give them away as an advertising write-off.

Then the stores can brag about how  'green' they are.

Stop making them. BUT, we do not have the right to put people out of business. If the plastic bag businesses are smart, they are going to start manufacturing water-resistant strong paper bags right now, before someone passes a law banning them.  There is a biodegradable plastic, but I do not know how many hundreds of years it takes to degrade them.

you can introduce cartons instead of using plastic bags in the grocery shops.carton is easily degradable and it also can be used again for various purposes especially for art work.so i think u can suggest cartons as substitute for plastic bags

a lot of stores in europe have started charging them for plastic bags, which decreases the use. some stores limit the amount of plastic bags given, and some don't even carry them.
