Question:

What is the best way to get published in a magazine?

I've been writing a column via blog for the past few months, and being the uncommon 16 year old male, I've been writing my "love advice" column on the subject of teen relationships, as well as "revealing" the inner workings of guys and girls' minds, and giving clues that can circumvent them. I've gotten good reviews, and I was wondering how to get into contact with an editor of a magazine/paper/etc. Preferably a teen magazine because I believe it would reach the largest audience. Does anyone have any idea of...

1. What publications I should go for?

2. How I can get in contact with some people?

Thanks....

  1. I would keep track teen magazines out there - bear in mind that most of them write "in house", i.e. they do not use freelancers.

I would start local by approaching magazines and newspapers in your area - while you have a blog, a "tear sheet" (list of articles that you were paid to write) is a good thing to have. (first link is my tear sheet )

I would check out Mediabistro.  They keep track on everything in the magazine biz. And I would recommend that you carry business cards with your name and the URL to your blog with you.  I tend to meet editors in line at the movies, etc. It's good to be prepared.

  2. just call up the company you want to work for. Speak to the human resource department.

also try up and coming magazines. look on craigslist
