  1. We grew our tomato crop by throwing the dish washing water over the garden and tomatoes grew,we had been having salad. We now just get any seeds left on the plates and grow our own tomatoes.

  2. The tomatoes need to be red/ripe. Also you can't just take the seeds and dry them, they need to ferment a bit.

Here's a link to a page with directions on it. Have fun. :)

  3. I once did this after buying some tomatoes on the market. They were delicious so i saved some seeds from a tomatoe and wrapped them in a tissue and stored them in the airing cupboard over the winter. The following spring I planted the seeds and  they soon germinated.I got a good supply of plants which I planted and had a wonderful crop of beautiful tomatoes.Unfortunately because they were so good I didn,t save the seeds again but ate the last one.

  4. It's better to let the seeds develop as fully as possible, as they will then have a full bank of resources to help the seedlings grow and develop as best as they can.  For this reason red tomatoes will have more perfectly matured seeds.  Collect, clean and dry afterwards.

If you're collecting seeds from F1 Hybrid varieties be aware that the seedlings are unlikely to come true from seed, as these hybrids are produced from controlled crossing of 2 distinct parents, with differing characteristics - their offspring are likely to have a mix of these 2 parents traits.  They may cross one parent (say dwarf) with good fruiting ability, with another with high taste that's tall and vigorous etc,  producing uniform offspring that are virgorous, tall and taste fantastic - though their 'children' may have dwarfs with poor taste etc.  So saving your own seeds is a great way to save money, perpetuate good plants, but also has some potential pitfalls with F1 hybrid varieties that's worth watching out for.

Hope this helps.  Good luck!   Rob

  5. I have stray seedlings growing from my compost pile so obviously plants can grow from dried-out fruit, but there are many websites that better describe how to propagate tomatoes with sterilized seeds.

The seeds from red tomatoes (seeds from green tomatoes aren't mature/viable yet) are first fermented in water by soaking them for a few days.  Then the seeds are removed from the water and dried thoroughly.  Then they are ready for sowing.  This process takes about a week.

But here in the Southwest desert tomatoes seem to do well just by cutting them open and letting the seeds dry in the ground...the way they propagated in South America.

  6. Hi,

I think when the tomatos are red it a better time to deseed them.  If your planting straight away, all you need to do is squeeze a tomato in the area you want to grow them. If you want to keep the seeds, place some on newspaper or a chopping board or something of sort & leave them to sry out in the sun.  Once they are completely dry (won't take long) put them into packets.

    Hope this helps.

  7. Tomatoes are extremely easy to grow .... after all they sprout just about anywhere a bird has been! .... just open the tomatoe, let the seeds dry out on some kitchen paper (make sure all the surrounding flesh has dried out) and then plant them in any container with some compost ... best to start them on a kitchen windowsill - when they start sprouting separate them and put them in some form of propogator (cover each plant with a plastic bottle that's had the top cut off and some holes poked through).... when the plants are about six inches high they can then be transferred to a greenhouse and allowed to grow like any other plant .... just remember to water well and feed regularly.....

    :)

  8. You won't be guaranteed to get the same quality as a lot of hybrid plants will revert to the original but if you manage it, best of luck
