  1. The cruise port is  a good hour long drive from downtown Rome.  Its a good highway but you can get stuck in traffic; we did.  You can take a taxi probably but it will also probably cost you big bucks.  So I suggest that if you are booking a cruise you include transfers to and from Rome to the port.  That way the cruise line will not leave you; since they will be responsible for the bus and they do wait on their tour and transfer buses

  2. Hi

Sounds like a great trip.  Unfortunately, since you are doing a pre-cruise stay and, I'm assuming, not something booked through the cruise lines, then the only way you can use their transfers, is by going back out to the airport and catching them there.

Since you are staying near the train station, I would recommend taking a taxi to the train station, take the train to

Civitavecchia, and a very short cab ride to the ship.

The travel times and train fares vary depending on what time you are traveling and can range from $17-26 per person for first class.  There is a train that leaves just after noon and arrives in Civitavecchia in 1/2 hour.  You can purchase your tickets (in dollars) in the US before you go, or at the train station in Rome.  Purchasing here is usually a much better deal.

Not only is this much less expensive than the cruise line's transfer (even if you include cab fare at both ends), but its much quicker, a nicer ride, no worries about traffic and missing the ship.  The only item I will caution you about will be you will have to load and unload your luggage on the train.  The stations have luggage carts (like at the airport), but there are no porters.

Have a good trip.  If you have any questions, call me at 866-485-8175 - I'm an agent and will be glad to help you.

  3. If you are coming from the airport or near it I would recommend that you get the cruise line to pick you up. They offer transfers for most all airport to the cruise port. They are usually about the same or less than a taxi would be and then the cruise line also knows that you are there and the chances of you missing the cruise is very low.
